PAST AND PRESENT FRANCISCANS IN HAWAII

This article appears in the February 2008 issue of HONOLULU Magazine. It is an updating of the work of the Sisters of Saint Francis in Hawaii.

Sister M. Candida Oroc

THE MISSIONARY SPIRIT OF SISTER M. CANDIDA OROC

of Honolulu has official sanction to take on her challenging "dream" job of running a program to give numerous presentations throughout the Diocese of Honolulu  "to inform its members more about Blessed Marianne and the Sisters' presence of 125 years in Hawaii...continuing this legacy as Srs. of St. Francis."

Sister's three year plan envisions visiting 53 parishes and schools leaving the Franciscan sisters' own parishes and schools in Hawaii to those who work there. The present plan includes talks to church groups, youth groups and school groups during the day or evening. A Power Point presentation already has been prepared. Sr. Candida who is semi-retired visits Kalaupapa, Molokai, on a monthly basis better enabling her to give her presentations a personal touch from her knowledge and experiences.

Sister Candida asks us:  "Please pray that I remain well and energized."  We do so pray and thank her for her inspiring dedication and accompanying hard work.  Many years ago Sister Candida turned over to the Cause a beautiful letter written by Blessed Marianne to Sr. Albina Sluder. She had cherished this letter for nearly twenty years and kept it in her possession until something serious was happening about Mother's cause.  It was difficult to part with but she did so.

In looking up this letter content it seems one can believe that Mother Marianne had Sister Candida in mind when she wrote:
"May (God) also bless you with good health and strength so you will be able to lead the little ones to Him, and teach them to love God more than anything in this world....." Yours affectionately, Sister Marianne,  Feb.23, 1915.
